Headgear is used in dentofacial orthopedics to create facial balance. Headgear that pulls against the head and neck is used to treat patients whose upper teeth and jaws stick out too far forward. Protraction headgear that pulls against the forehead and chin is used to treat patients who have "an underbite" with the lower teeth and jaw forward of the upper teeth and jaw. Headgear gently "pulls" your teeth against your head or face to control the forward growth of your upper teeth and jaw. When the jaws are in balance with each other the teeth can be aligned with more favorable angulations.
